A side rave is the longitudinal steel member that runs along each side of the load platform on a curtainsider or flatbed trailer or rigid body. It forms the outer edge of the floor, provides structural strength to the load base and, on many vehicles, serves as a key attachment point for load restraint equipment.
On a typical curtainsider, the flooring panels butt directly against the inside of the side rave. Because it is a structural steel component, it is designed to withstand the forces generated when loads are restrained correctly.
How is a side rave used for load restraint?
Modern side raves are commonly designed to accommodate different methods of securing loads. Depending on the body specification, they may provide:
- EN 12640 lashing point holes for attaching load restraint hooks.
- V-groove pull-up lashing posts that accept vertical restraint posts.
- Underside engagement where specially designed hooks wrap underneath the side rave to secure webbing straps.
The attachment method depends on the body design and the type of load restraint equipment being used. Different hook designs are available to suit different side rave profiles and applications.
Why is the side rave important?
The side rave performs two important functions:
- It contributes to the structural integrity and rigidity of the load platform.
- It provides secure anchor locations for load restraint systems, helping operators restrain loads safely and in accordance with the body specification.
Where lashing points are provided, they should be used within their rated capacity and in accordance with EN 12640 and the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.
Can side raves be repaired or modified?
Although side raves are robust steel components designed for demanding commercial vehicle applications, they can sometimes require repair or modification following accident damage or changes in operational requirements.
