What Is HF Welding for PVC Commercial Vehicle Curtains?
High-frequency welding, usually shortened to HF welding, is a method of joining compatible thermoplastic materials. It is also known as radio-frequency or dielectric welding and is particularly suited to PVC, the material commonly used for commercial vehicle curtains.
Rather than applying heat from an external flame or hot tool, an HF welding machine places overlapping materials under pressure and applies a rapidly alternating electromagnetic field. This causes polar molecules within the PVC to move and generate heat through the material. The surfaces soften and fuse together, then remain under pressure while the joint cools and sets.
How is HF welding used in curtain manufacture?

Is HF welding the only welding method used?

HF welding generates heat within compatible material using an electromagnetic field, while hot-air welding introduces heat from outside the material before the layers are pressed together. Both methods can therefore be used at different stages of PVC curtain production.
How are HF-welded joints checked?
Finished welds are visually inspected during manufacture. Sapphire also carries out batch stress testing to check the integrity of welded construction as part of its production quality controls.
Is HF welding used for curtain repairs?
HF welding is generally used to manufacture new and replacement curtains rather than to complete routine patch repairs. The most suitable repair method depends on the location and extent of the damage and the condition of the surrounding curtain material.
