EN 12642-XL Marking on side curtains

EN 12642-XL Explained

EN 12642 sets minimum requirements for commercial vehicle body structures used in cargo securing. It provides a common basis for assessing how the complete body structure performs under defined loading conditions.

What does XL mean?

XL identifies the enhanced body-structure performance level within EN 12642. Vehicles represented as XL should have documentation identifying the tested body configuration and relevant operating conditions.

The curtain is one part of the body

On a curtainsider, the roof, front wall, rear structure, floor, side structure, curtain, reinforcements and attachment systems work together. A curtain described as suitable for an XL application does not independently make a vehicle compliant.

Replacement curtains

A replacement for an XL-certified body should be manufactured to the correct approved specification. Material, reinforcement, straps, fittings and attachment details may all be significant.

Check the vehicle body certification and obtain competent advice before changing any component that forms part of the certified structure.

Dynamic Testing

Dynamic testing simulates forces generated by braking, swerving and changes in direction. It verifies that an EN 12642-XL body can contain loads without additional restraints when goods are positioned correctly.
