BS EN 12640 is the recognised standard for lashing points used to secure cargo on commercial vehicles and intermodal loading units. It sets minimum requirements and test methods for the anchorage points to which load restraint equipment is attached. The current UK edition is BS EN 12640:2019.
The standard applies to the vehicle-mounted lashing points rather than to the webbing straps themselves. On a curtainsider trailer or curtainsider rigid body, these points may include purpose-designed anchorages such as pull-up lashing posts incorporated into the side rave. Their role is to provide a defined connection between the vehicle structure and the chosen load restraint system.
How EN 12640 relates to load restraint straps
A cargo control strap can only transfer restraint forces into the vehicle through its attachment points. Where a Sapphire load restraint strap has an end fitting designed to engage with a pull-up lashing post, that post and its supporting structure must be suitable for the intended load restraint arrangement. An EN 12640-rated lashing point provides a tested and identified anchorage for this purpose.
This does not mean that an EN 12640 lashing point makes every strap or securing arrangement suitable for every load. The strap, its end fittings, the anchorage point, the vehicle structure and the way the load is restrained must all be appropriate for the forces involved. In practical terms, the complete arrangement is limited by its weakest applicable component.
Why the standard matters on curtainsiders
Standard curtains are primarily intended to contain and protect the load space from the weather; they should not be assumed to provide the restraint needed to prevent cargo movement. Suitable load restraint may therefore need to be attached to rated points in the trailer or rigid body structure.
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency lists BS EN 12640:2019 among the principal British Standards used for load securing. Its guidance explains that standards are recognised reference points when deciding whether a securing system is suitable, although they are not themselves road traffic law. EN 12640 and other load restraint standards
EN 12640 is specific to lashing points. Other standards cover different parts of a load restraint system, including web lashings and vehicle body strength. A compliant or rated component should not be treated as proof that the complete vehicle and load combination is adequately secured; the securing method must still be selected for the particular load and operation.
