Tipper Roll-Over Covers

Sapphire Curtains manufactures made-to-measure roll-over covers for rigid tipper bodies, tipping trailers, agricultural trailers and other suitable tipper applications. These covers are also commonly known within the industry as easy sheets or tipper sheets.

The cover rolls laterally from the offside to the nearside of the vehicle before being tensioned across the width of the body. It provides a practical means of covering loose bulk material during transport, helping to protect the load from the weather and contain material that could otherwise escape from the body.

Made for new and existing tipper bodies

Each roll-over cover is manufactured in PVC-coated fabric to suit the dimensions and configuration of the individual body and sheeting system. Sapphire can produce covers for new-build applications or manufacture replacements for existing sheets, without restricting supply to a particular vehicle, body or sheeting-system manufacturer.

Covers can be made for both manually operated and powered side-roll systems. Sapphire supplies the fabricated sheet together with the required side and intermediate poles, rather than the complete mechanical operating system.

Manufactured details can include:

  • reinforced wear bands in areas regularly exposed to abrasion;
  • side and intermediate poles;
  • fabricated pockets, hems and reinforced sections;
  • attachment fittings appropriate to the particular system; and
  • ratchet straps for tensioning the cover across the body.

Replacement, repair and modification

In addition to supplying complete new covers, Sapphire can manufacture replacement sheets for existing systems. Existing covers can also be repaired or modified where practical, subject to an assessment of the material, damage and overall condition of the sheet.

Customers can provide body dimensions, drawings, photographs or an existing cover to help establish the required construction and attachment details. The appropriate specification will depend on the body, operating system and intended load.

Covering and load security

A roll-over cover can help contain loose material and prevent it from being blown or bounced from the vehicle. However, a cover should not be treated as a substitute for any additional load-securing measures required for the material being carried. The DVSA guidance on covering loads states that covers must be suitable for the load type and are intended for containment rather than providing sufficient load restraint by themselves.

Sheeting and unsheeting procedures should also reflect the operator's workplace risk assessment. The Health and Safety Executive guidance on sheeting vehicles provides further information on managing the risks associated with this activity.
