A transverse net, also known as a kite (or sometimes a nappy), is an adjustable load restraint system fitted across the width of a curtainsider trailer or rigid body. Positioned behind the load and tensioned to the side rave, it forms a restraint barrier that helps prevent longitudinal load shift during transport.
Transverse nets are particularly useful where loads are carried against the headboard with unused space remaining towards the rear of the vehicle. As deliveries are made, the net can be repositioned behind the remaining load and re-tensioned, making it well suited to multi-drop distribution operations. Multiple transverse nets can also be specified where separate blocks of load require independent restraint.
Construction
Transverse nets are manufactured from reinforced netting or PVC tarpaulin material with reinforced edges and additional webbing across the span to provide strength and durability.
Installation and operation
The upper edge of the net is normally suspended from rollers that run within dedicated roof-mounted tracks extending along the length of the vehicle. The lower edge incorporates straps, hooks and ratchet tensioners which secure to the side rave. Additional forward-angled tension straps can also be specified where increased restraint performance is required.
Kites may be fitted during the manufacture of a new vehicle or installed as a retrofit. Retrofit installations require suitable roof-mounted tracks where these are not already fitted.

Performance
The restraint straps conform to EN 12195-2. Overall restraint performance depends on the complete installation and configuration. Systems relying solely on the roof track are limited by the strength of that connection, while additional rated forward restraint straps can be specified where a higher-rated assembly is required.
