The Sapphire LoadFix bungee system suspends EN 12195-2 rated rave-to-rave load restraint straps within the dead roof space of a curtainsider. When required, the operator simply pulls each strap down over the load before tensioning it in the normal manner. Once released, the straps automatically retract back into the roof space, leaving the loading area clear.
Sapphire manufactures the LoadFix system in the UK. When used appropriately, the rave-to-rave strapping arrangement is recognised by the DVSA as a compliant load restraint solution for curtainsider vehicles.
How the bungee retraction system works
Bungee cord is interwoven between specialist roller assemblies mounted within opposing roof tracks. Each end of the bungee assembly connects to a standard EN 12195-2 rated restraint strap, typically using a snap hook or ring.
To secure the load, the operator pulls the restraint strap down from the roof space against the tension of the bungee cord before tensioning it between the side raves using its ratchet mechanism.
When released, the bungee cord retracts the complete strap assembly back into the dead roof space, keeping the trailer ready for its next loading operation.
Safer and more efficient loading
Suspending the restraint straps above the loading area prevents them from cluttering the trailer floor while the vehicle is being loaded or unloaded.
It also removes the need to throw conventional straps over the load. Apart from being awkward, this practice can present a safety risk because the hooks or fittings at the ends of the strap may strike someone standing on the opposite side of the vehicle.
Instead, the straps remain suspended above the load while pallets or other cargo are positioned before being pulled down only when restraint is required.
Flexible strap positioning
The roller assemblies can slide freely from front to rear within the roof-mounted tracks, allowing each restraint strap to be positioned wherever it is required. The opposing tracks are typically installed approximately 200mm inboard of the roof rails.
Additional restraint assemblies can be added if operational requirements change. For a typical 26-pallet curtainsider, it is common to provide one restraint strap for each pair of pallets, resulting in approximately 13 strap assemblies.
Vehicle compatibility
The LoadFix system is suitable for most curtainsider trailers and rigid bodywork, including double-deck vehicles. It is generally unsuitable for tilt bodies because of their different structural design.
The system can be installed on new vehicles or retrofitted to suitable existing trailers, subject to an assessment of the roof structure and its suitability for the roof-mounted tracks and roller assemblies.
EN 12195-2 compliance
The LoadFix system suspends and retracts the restraint straps but does not alter their rated performance. The restraint assembly therefore retains the same performance characteristics as the equivalent EN 12195-2 strap used without the bungee suspension system.
Each loose strap assembly is labelled by Sapphire in accordance with EN 12195-2. A typical assembly comprises the main restraint strap and a separate tail connected by a ratchet mechanism.
LoadFix restraint options
The standard LoadFix system uses conventional 50mm restraint straps suitable for most palletised and general haulage applications.
Where loads are particularly susceptible to crushing or indentation, LoadFix is also available with wide flexible restraint sections that spread the restraint force over a much larger contact area.
For particularly delicate products, a full-width flexible cover version is also available, providing even greater load contact while using the same suspended LoadFix operating principle.
